The issue of EV charging for multi-dwelling properties is particularly prevalent in Europe, where many more people live in apartments. However, it could also become problematic for those in residential complexes without adjacent parking lots or garages.

There are various ways to ensure South Africans in multi-dwelling properties like residential complexes can charge their electric vehicles at home.

Some people living in complexes might also have a garage or parking bay adjacent to their properties, making these options viable for them. These charging stations are very expensive — priced at well over R300,000 — and require high-capacity electricity infrastructure.Even if it has incredibly high speeds ranging from 25kW to 150kW, residents might have to schedule turns to recharge on shared chargers.Bruzzaniti said providing each resident with a dedicated AC charging station made more sense. These are typically priced between R10,000 and R25,000 and can typically charge at 7kW, 11kW, or 22kW.

The first option is installing charge stations with RFID access control and individual electricity meters for every charging bay belonging to an EV owner. These charge stations are controlled by the complex’s management through a mobile app and are ideally suited for complexes with limited power capacity.

The management could also set the charge stations to only make charging possible during off-peak periods.
