The City of Greater Sudbury’s first-ever electric Zamboni is stationed at the T.M. Davies Community Centre and Arena in Lively and is receiving early positive reviews

The city’s first-ever electric Zamboni is receiving positive reviews from city staff following its first few months of use.

The electric Zamboni came at a cost of approximately $180,000, which city Assets and Fleet Services director Shawn Turner said is approximately 40 per cent more expensive than propane-fuelled machines. The vehicle’s battery is charged between ice-resurfacing routines, which typically between 50-minute bookings and consist of driving in seven circles through the rink. Lavigne said the machine would likely last a full day on a single charge, but that they continually keep it greater than 75 per cent to help extend the battery’s lifespan.

“The city must continue to integrate climate change action into projects, plans and budgets,” city Strategic and Environmental Planning manager Dr. Stephen Monet’s report read.
