What’s less obvious is that local electricity networks also have to be upgraded to accommodate the extra power demand from both home charging and public charging for EVs. That’s not happening at anything like the required speed either.
Australians’ hesitation about availability of public charging stations are second only to their concerns about EV price tags. The former may take longer to fix. Efficiently managing this new source of demand for power is critical. Few drivers want to wait in long queues to access public charging facilities or spend hours charging their batteries at a slow rate while on the go.
Installing higher voltage three-phase power supply in homes, for example, rather than the normal single-phase power in residential use is expensive. The advantage is that it can handle a 22-kilowatt charger, allowing a recharge in about four hours depending on the car. But not even the Biden administration’s billions of dollars in subsidies to scale up the US network were enough to keep Musk’s interest when EV sales are not growing as quickly as predicted. Musk posted on social media that Tesla planned to grow its charging network – “just at a slower pace”.
