Energy suppliers will have less time to complete a requested switch before having to pay compensation

Ofgem has brought in a new rule from today which will see more households get a £30 payment from their supplier.

READ MORE: Major changes to household bills from Monday include £240 energy savings and £100 tax rise At the time of the announcement, Melissa Giordano, deputy director for retail systems and processes at Ofgem, said: "Customers who see better energy deals on the market or experience poor service must be able to vote with their feet and move energy supplier quickly."

It comes as the average household energy bill falls to its lowest point in two years after Ofgem lowered its price cap in response to wholesale prices. In some long-awaited good news for energy customers, the regulator’s price cap has dropped by 12.3 per cent from the previous £1,928 for a typical dual fuel household in England, Scotland and Wales to £1,690 - a fall of £238 over the course of a year, or about £20 a month.
