In Zimbabwe, Mountain Mujakalu lives at a mining community in Bikita. “There are many women and children working in the mines,” he says. “They smash lithium rocks to extract a residue for Vim – a dish-scouring powder – for resale.” The Bikita Minerals mine, which was acquired in 2022 by China’s Sonomine Resource Group, holds 11 million tonnes of lithium.
