Industrial action by workers at poles and wires company Endeavour Energy is stalling the delivery of 1600 homes and $1.2 billion worth of warehouses in Sydney.

Already a subscriber?Five months of industrial action by workers at poles and wires company Endeavour Energy has delayed the construction of 1600 homes and a slew of warehouses owned by ASX-listed property giants, adding millions of dollars in extra costs.

Greenfields, which is owned by the Rich Lister Perich family, is building about 15,000 homes on land the family owns in Oran Park, in south-western Sydney. While many homes have been built, Mr Owens warned that another 600 housing lots would likely be delayed by the industrial action.“We’re in the middle of a housing crisis and we’ve had six appointments where they haven’t turned up and final connections aren’t made,” he said.

The work bans, which the union has vowed to ramp up later this week, have also slowed $1.2 billion of industrial developments, including an Amazon fulfilment centre, Brickworks managing director Lindsay Partridge said.He called on the NSW government to intervene in the dispute, suggesting that if a deal was not made soon, construction of some projects would be abandoned, intensifying the housing and industrial property crunch.

The developer had been “kicking pebbles” for two months on a $40 million land subdivision in western Sydney, waiting for one day of work from Endeavour Energy to connect to the network and complete the project.“We’re just sitting on the land, under pressure from financiers to settle our sales and pay the debt back,” the developer said. “Unions don’t seem to care what the impact is, whether it’s a large institutional developer or, like us, a small private developer.

The ETU’s industrial action means requests for planned outages and electricity network maintenance have been repeatedly cancelled and often with only 15 to 30 minutes’ notice.Last week the union escalated its industrial action so that it banned switching in the control room as well as by field crews. From this Friday to Sunday the ETU will not only ban switching but also refuse to unlock any devices, from phones, iPads and computers to switchboards, access gates and substations.
