Last month, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa approved National Free Basic Electricity. The set commencement date for this regulation is Monday, 1 July.The National Free Basic Electricity rate has been sanctioned at 194.40c/kWh for the 2024/2025 municipal financial year.

Among other things, this includes basic functions such as essential media access, lighting and basic water heating.
