On April 15, Tim Webster presented to MOPC’s finance and property meeting, outlining his project and asking for council’s support. If the project is funded, MOPC would be the first county on the list to benefit from the research's results.

The goal of this work, said Webster, isn’t just to evaluate historical data but to create real-time, up-to-date data sheets and maps to help predict the impact of the changing climate. The ability to predict disasters and the path of disasters is something that Webster wants to apply to not only water levels and storm flooding but also wildfires.

The project also aims to make all of this information publicly available online for the public, emergency services, and experts to access. “A big part of the takeaway from the presentation was how incredibly accurate their modelling was when you go back, and you look at the water level during Fiona – it is incredibly accurate,” McDowell said. “This is juxtaposed against the accuracy of the provincial information to date. So, it’s proof of concept, and I think that was the big takeaway from the presentation the other day.

Tim Webster is a research scientist with NSCC's geomatics team. He proposed his research project looking at coastal erosion and creating data sets around coastal and river flooding, as well as forecasts for wildfires to the Municipality of Pictou County Council on April 15. Contributed
