THE rapid evolution toward renewable energy, electric vehicles and an ever-expanding galaxy of 'smart' devices is exponentially increasing demand for metals, specifically copper, aluminum, nickel and rare earth metals. This is creating a whole list of unintended consequences, not the least of which is the very real possibility that the world may run out of a few of the more critical resources in a very short period of time.
Recycling what is referred to in shorthand as 'clean energy metals,' as challenging as it is, seems to be the best answer to extending supplies and reducing their environmental impact, and some institutions and entrepreneurs are now turning their attention to the subject. The first challenge, not surprisingly, is to determine just how much waste containing clean energy metals is being generated and where.
