Western Digital has signed a collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad through its wholly-owned subsidiary, TNB Renewables to drive renewable energy implementation in its operations in Malaysia

Western Digital partners with Tenaga Nasional to integrate renewable energy within its Malaysia operationsCompany aims to achieve 100% renewal energy globally by 2030Western Digital has signed a collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad through its wholly-owned subsidiary, TNB Renewables Sdn. Bhd. to drive renewable energy implementation in its operations in Malaysia with the signing of the Corporate Green Power Agreement under the Corporate Green Power Program .

Under this CGPA, Western Digital will acquire renewable energy from TNB Renewables Sdn. Bhd. The new solar power generation facility will be built for Western Digital’s consumption in Kedah. This would be deployed to three Western Digital operations sites in Malaysia, including SanDisk Storage Malaysia , WD Media Penang and WD Media Johor, fulfilling 25% of the company’s overall energy requirement in the country.

“This collaboration with TNB is an important milestone for Western Digital to help achieve our ambitious target of running our global operations on 100% renewable energy by 2030 and further reinforces our company’s core commitment to sustainability,” said Bock Kim Lee, Senior Vice President, Global Flash Backend Operations, Western Digital.

Western Digital's participation in the CGPP program in Malaysia adds to the company's ongoing efforts to drive renewable energy implementations at its local sites. Globally, Western Digital has also entered into long-term renewable energy agreements in other countries including the Philippines and the United States.

Western Digital has set ambitious goals as part of its sustainability program. The company’s targets include running its global operations on 100% renewable energy, reducing water withdrawals by 20%, and diverting more than 95% of the company’s operational waste from landfills by 2030, and achieving net zero emissions in the company’s operations by 2032. Its Batu Kawan site was also recognised by the World Economic Forum’s Lighthouse Network as Asia’s first Sustainability Lighthouse.
