After Hurricane Beryl brought devastation to the Caribbean, leading to the death of four Jamaicans earlier this month, Jamaica’s top envoy in Canada says work cannot stop until the threat of climate change is toppled. The hurricane was the earliest Category 5 storm in recorded history, gaining power from the Caribbean Sea that was four degrees warmer than normal.
“It really shook us, and made us understand because you sat, and you experience, and you watched the things flying across the sky,” she said. The 1988 hurricane caused the deaths of 45 Jamaicans, and led to $700-million in damages. Back then, it took weeks for power to be restored, but in the days that followed this month's Hurricane Beryl, power came back for most of the 400,000 people that lost it.
