Facing climbing demand due to population growth and climate change, the San Antonio utility spending millions to replace aging power plants ahead of schedule.

CPS Energy, which already has more generation capacity than it needs to serve San Antonio, is pushing to add more. The city-owned utility is looking for land where it can build gas-powered plants that can provide power quickly when demand is high, in part to replace the capacity of aging generating units it wants to retire. The locations and amounts of space being sought to build the utility’s next 440 megawatts of generation capacity are still to be determined, CPS leaders said this week.

Energy acquiring three gas-fired generating plants in $785 million deal with Talen Energy The moves come after CPS recently closed a $785 million deal to add 1,700 megawatts of capacity through its acquisition of the Corpus Christi and Laredo gas-fired plants of a national utility exiting Texas’ independent electric grid.

Energy rate hike goes into effect Feb. 1; average bills to increase $4.45 per month CPS customers this year were hit with a 4.25% rate increase the utility said it needed to raise money for buying and building more generation, replacing aging infrastructure and other needs. It was the second rate hike in two years, but isn’t likely to be the last. When this year’s increase was approved, CPS was already forecasting it would need to seek another in 2025.

Energy seeking jury trial in case over 'unconscionable prices' for gas during Winter Storm Uri Power costs cap at about $5,000 per megawatt hour. CPS’ peak load in the summer is about 5,700 megawatts. That could mean an hour without enough power for the local market could add up to tens of millions of dollars more shouldered by CPS customers, Ball said.

asks ERCOT to approve shutdown of Braunig power units as clean energy transition rolls on CPS says it will reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. “What that does for us is positions our portfolio to add continually decreasing carbon emissions, while also preserving optionality in the next two decades,” Ball said. Most of the Talen units will probably run another 25 years. One of the older plants will go offline in four years, however — reducing the total megawatts acquired by 17%.
