John Tyndall has traditionally been heralded as the first scientist to discover the greenhouse effect in 1859. But three years earlier, American suffragist and amateur scientisthad conducted experiments using glass cylinders filled with different gases, exposing them to sunlight to measure temperature changes. Her paper, titled ‘Circumstances affecting the heat of the sun’s rays’, made almost the same claim as Tyndall, specifically about carbon dioxide and water vapor.
