Ireland's over-reliance on non-renewable heating has been blamed as a major contributory factor

The forecast is contained in a report from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, which predicts that 13% of the country's energy will be derived from renewable sources next year. However, that is 3% short of EU targets. The report, which is published every year, gives us an idea of how Ireland is progressing, as it seeks to achieve 2030 and 2050 emissions targets.

What it finds is that those targets are still achievable, but only if radical reductions are delivered - such as reductions similar in scale to the 1.8% drop in carbon emission last year. However, last year's reduction was largely due to a three month outage at the coal-burning Moneypoint power station in Co Clare, which is now back up and running.

Meanwhile, leaked figures from the Department of Climate Action and Environment suggest that Ireland is currently on course to fall 80% short of its 2030 targets. Separately today, the European Climate Foundation has assessed Ireland's draft National Energy and Climate Plan and given us a score of 38/100.

Why renewable targets in the first place? Surely the real goal is reduced emissions and it is blatantly obvious that wind/solar are pathetic in helping us achieve this objective. Go nuclear!

'Wind resources' - just how may different 'wind resources' has Ireland got? The rest of the world has just one.

GeorgeLeeRTE not asking any questions about wind - more or less a promo piece - No CBA, no SEA, 1500 turbines saving 4-5% of co2 at enormous financial, env and social cost. The groupthink continues.

jimmerz50 We need moral leadership from this government, not just always buying voters.

We missed the boat in more ways that one: Ireland could have had a wind generator manufacturing industry in the 1970s, as Denmark did, but there was no one to champion it. Now we import wind generators..

The only thing Ireland doesn’t miss targets on is adding new taxes and levies into everything. everyoneshouldemigrate

Meanwhile just got 100m for beef farmers to continue to pollute. Think how far that would have gone in alternative power infrastructure. Disgrace

Just because Moneypoint is now available doesn’t mean it will run -we are now a month without coal being used in power gen in ROI GeorgeLeeRTE

Because every time a wind farm is looking for planning there’s objections. We should also have more off shore wind farms.

Days like this of wind turbines doing nothing is all too common. Habitats, Wildlife, Communities, all upturned and bulldozed for no good.

Wind being forced into places to replace this otherwise real proposed natural development. Which do you think will cause more CO2 during its implementation?

Ireland misses every target for everything !

So the obvious conclusion is that wind doesn't work

Ireland produces 60.million of the global CO2 emissions of 37 billion tons..Paying a fine of €150 million will make no difference to the temperature of the world or Ireland....

what a joke. Europe's windiest country and eff- all to show for it energy wise.

Of course we are... because we have useless politicians in power for decades who have no idea how to make decisions & are stuck in the past.

The Ireland government is “the non green energy” government

Let's hope they don't try the we will burn wood because it can grow again but the reality of burning fast growth trees is it produces air pollution and does more damage than good.
