Texas must explore energy options beyond renewables and fossil fuels.

What sets small modular reactors apart is their ability to generate around 300 megawatts of energy, tailored to power smaller neighborhoods and communities independently.The summer months will once again put our power grid under enormous stress, with record demand expected as the 100-degree days approach. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas is already predicting, with solar and wind power leading growth, and more gas plants expected to be built in the next few years.

One option already available is the deployment of small modular reactors. One of these reactors can produce 300 megawatts of electricity and provide energy to 250,000 homes. This is the equivalent of 60,000 solar panels in residences. A wind turbine produces from 2 to 3 MW per unit. SMRs, as these reactors are known, come with a high upfront investment of a few billion dollars. But over time, SMRs can reduce energy costs by 35%, Perkins said. Costs can be also reduced further by converting old coal plants and retraining the workforce.But even as nuclear energy today is safer and more reliable, the price tag is still prohibitive.
