Carbon Capture,Wind Power,Wyoming

Wyoming is the nation's top coal mining state, but Republican Gov. Mark Gordon is a leading voice on climate-friendly energy projects. Amid pushback, Gordon has set a net-negative emissions goal.

This is an updated version of a story first published on Dec. 10, 2023. The original video can be viewed here. The debate over energy policy is sometimes boiled down to a caricature: Republicans are seen as favoring fossil fuels like oil and coal, and Democrats portrayed as promoting more climate-friendly wind and solar power. The reality is much more complicated, of course, and the best proof of that may be found in one of the reddest states in America – Wyoming.

Because of that stark fact, Krutka and her colleagues are focused on taking the CO2 out of fossil fuels like coal before it reaches the atmosphere, with a technology called carbon capture and storage.Dr. Holly Krutka: There are carbon capture and storage projects in America working right now. There's just not enough. The capture side, we're there. Today.Bill Whitaker: You can do it now?Dr. Holly Krutka: Right now. Yes.
