The war over the kind of charging plug that electric vehicles in North America will use has been won. Now only skirmishes remain. Another auto maker has come into the Tesla fold, but a few car companies are still holding out. They probably shouldn’t.

“With six fully electric BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce models now available in the U.S. market, and more to come, it is our top priority to ensure that our drivers have easy access to reliable, fast charging,” said BMW North America CEO Sebastian Mackensen in a news release. BMW is selling a lot of EVs in the U.S. and abroad. The German auto maker delivered 621,699 vehicles in the third quarter of 2023, up about 6% from the same time last year. The total included 93,931 all-battery electric vehicles, or BEVs, up almost 80% in one year. BEVs accounted for more than 15% of total sales. A year ago, BEV penetration of BMW sales was less than 9%.

Along with BMW, Ford Motor , General Motors , Polestar Automotive , Volvo, Mercedes-Benz , Hyundai Motor , Kia , Honda Motor , Nissan , and Rivian Automotive along with a few others are going to use the NACS plug.
