Customers of the country’s third-biggest electricity retailer, EnergyAustralia, face increases in tariffs of up to 14.1 per cent driven by last year’s surge in the cost of wholesale power, again underlining the time it will take for government efforts to rein in prices to flow through to energy bills.
Small businesses will have similar but slightly smaller increases on a percentage basis, but on absolute terms the increase will be bigger, at up to $641 on average in Queensland. Customers in Victoria typically have their tariffs adjusted around mid-year., with some customers facing increases of 35 per cent.
Mr Brownfield said that while the price rises would not be welcomed given cost-of-living pressures, it was costing EnergyAustralia more to generate and purchase power for a range of reasons.
