‘Rock and a hard place’: party insiders say managing internal divisions on gun control Singh’s ‘biggest test’ as left-leaning hunters set sights on rural, northern MPsAlthough the Liberals say they’re willing to review controversial changes to their gun-control legislation to avoid targeting common firearms used by hunters, the pressure is already mounting on the NDP to speak out as “left-leaning” hunters set their sights on MPs representing the party’s substantial rural, northwestern, and Indigenous constituencies.  Following the Nov. 17 introduction of amendments to Bill C-21 by Liberal MP Paul Chiang (Markham–Unionville, Ont.) at the House Public Safety and National Security Committee, Reddit users began posting on forums like r/canadaguns, and r/CanadaHunting that they had received information from their local NDP MPs indicating that the party opposed the amendments.  Chiang’s amendment would, among other things, ban “rifles and shotguns” that are “capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,” guns firing with more than 10,000 joules of energy, and those with “a bore diameter of 20 mm” or greater. “We just put forward a list and we’re consulting with Canadians on that,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (Papineau, Que.) said on Dec. 5. “That’s what we’re listening to: feedback on how to make sure that we’re not capturing weapons that are primarily hunting weapons.” Screenshot of The_Phaedron’s Reddit post encouraging ‘left-wing’ hunters to contact NDP MPs to encourage them to opposed the amendments to Bill C-21. Screenshot courtesy of Reddit In a post pinned to the top of r/CanadaHunting, a user by the name of “The_Phaedron,” who identified himself as a member of a riding executive in a midsize city who has worked on campaigns for the NDP in rural ridings, encouraged other “left-leaning” hunters to email NDP MP Alistair MacGregor (Cowichan–Malahat–Langford, B.C.), the party’s public safety critic, to pressure him to vote against the amendments at committee. Further down in the comments, Phaedron provides a list of email addresses and phone numbers for NDP MPs, including MacGregor, ranking them from lo LeftHandStu The reddit post and the article list Richard Cannings as MP for the wrong riding.
