Election periods are often the maturation times revealing the depth of our hatred toward one another. As politicians jockey for power come 2023, hate is generously spewed, dissonance voluminously hauled and hollered everywhere and anywhere, and corporate love is on austere display. I cannot really put a finger on why Nigeria is embroiled in prolonged and deep-seated ethnic schism.
Confrontations between ethnic groups fly frequently in Nigeria. Why do you think all major ethnic groups have formed militias to protect their own ethnic interests? It is because these groups don’t feel safe being shielded by the central law enforcement structures believed to be skewed toward a major ethnic group. In the present administration, political appointments have become annoying disappointments for many ethnic groups.
Someone once said that alone, we can do so little. But together we can do so much. It is true that the strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team. When will Nigeria become a real team not torn apart by ethnic intolerance? In a behemoth like ours, without teamwork, nothing works.
