Australia’s largest energy generator AGL said it will close the remains of its Torrens Island B gas power station in South Australia in 2026, nine years earlier than it previously suggested.

AGL said the closure will coincide with the opening of a new inter-connector between South Australia and New South Wales.

It will bring more electricity into the South Australian system, but will make the loss-making plant less viable. The company wants to turn the Torrens Island into a hub for renewable energy to preserve jobs, though no concrete plans have been set.
