What's causing these “historic, dangerous, prolonged and unprecedented' heat waves? They're caused by heat domes, which occurs when the atmosphere traps hot ocean air like a lid over a certain area.

Record-breaking heat is gripping the typically temperate U.S. Pacific Northwest, reviving fears of more wildfires and concerns for the health of vulnerable citizens not likely to have air conditioning.

Portland shut down some of its public transportation, and summer school was canceled. The heat wave also moved into Idaho, where temperatures above 100 F are forecast in Boise for at least seven days starting Monday.

What’s a heat dome? A heat dome occurs when the atmosphere traps hot ocean air like a lid over a certain area. It is associated with a blocking jetstream. Scientists always emphasize the difference between short-term weather and long-term climate change and they stress that the influence of climate change on blocking weather patterns is an active area of research.

Ground conditions can have their own effect. Parts of the Pacific Northwest are locked in a severe to extreme drought. Dry soils heat more easily than moist soils, contributing to the higher temperatures near the ground. And as the climate warms, soils dry out more quickly, reinforcing the cycle.Health concerns and other costs According to the U.S.

Thanks to climate change, heat waves and record temperatures in the Pacific Northwest may become commonplaceDescribed as a 'once in a millennium' weather event, the heat dome that has gripped the Pacific Northwest is notable because such extreme temperatures are a rarity in the region. But thanks to climate change, they may not be so unusual in the years to come. According to EPA and the Union of Concerned Scientists, the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s holds the record for peak frequency, intensity, and duration of heat waves across much of the United States to this day. To promote claims of 'catastrophic climate change' facts get ignored. Whatever puppets
