At least one electricity provider is urging customers to conserve energy amid a heat wave scorching the Northeast.

A New York power company on Tuesday requested that customers avoid using microwaves and other large appliances as a heat wave stresses the electric grid.The first heat wave of the season is impacting the Midwest and Northeast. As of Tuesday morning, the entire state of New York was under a heat advisory, according to the National Weather Service . Heat index values were expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and the heat was forecast to remain in New York until the weekend.

'The email goes on to list ways people can conserve energy, including limiting use of large appliances such as microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day. The company also suggested that customers use one large appliance at a time.The email also suggested people set their air conditioning to the highest comfortable temperature.Newsweek reached out to Con Edison by email for comment.
