South Africa’s energy situation has improved significantly since Kgosientsho Ramokgopa was appointed electricity minister.

President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Kgosientsho Ramokgopa as electricity minister in March 2023, and his first year in office has been fruitful.

The president said the electricity minister would be tasked with ending load-shedding and ensuring the implementation of his Energy Action Plan. As electricity minister, Ramokgopa announced his plan to end load-shedding in April 2023. The plans included unlocking untapped capacity and focusing on maintaining Eskom’s power stations.

Nonetheless, the president allocated a range of powers to Ramokgopa’s ministry in May 2023 — including the powers necessary to direct the procurement of new generation capacity and ensure security of supply. He explained that Kendal could provide an additional 1,000MW of capacity to the grid, but it had to slow down generation to meet emission requirements.

Coincidentally, this was the time leading up to the general elections on 29 May 2024. Cruise said EAF markedly improved before the end of May.
