With his leather trousers and lack of self-awareness, Kravitz proves that they don't make stars like this anymore

and his dreams of rock stardom. Revisiting his youth has, he says, encouraged him to reconnect with the wide-eyed earnestness of his early career, resulting in a batch of songs with a spring in their step.

True to that framing, boyish joy ripples through a project that cheerfully ignores Kravitz’s upcoming 60th birthday. But fans will be relieved to hear thatis also steeped in the rock god absurdity that has long been his calling card – and of which we were recently reminded when pictures of Kravitz at the gym in leather trousers, boots and sunglasses went viral.

Those two sides of his personality – the soul-baring and the ridiculous – come together wonderfully on opener “It’s Just Another Fine Day ”, which argues, not unreasonably, that we should count our blessings and look to the future with positivity. There’s just something so Lenny Kravitz about the over-the-top manner in which he conveys the sentiment, from the slinky funk guitars to the cheesy lyrics.

He is even more preposterous on “Human”. Here, his stadium rock rasp is paired with clattering cowbells, electronic handclaps, and enough 80s synths to fuel atribute night. In a similar vein, “Love Is My Religion” would be laughable were its plea for universal peace and harmony not delivered with such sincerity.Kravitz believes in love between strangers nearly as much as he does in leather trousers. That big-hearted quality is ultimately the record’s saving grace.

They don’t make stars like Lenny Kravitz any more. He is larger than life and immune to self-awareness or any sense of being in on the joke. But the world needs ludicrous rockers. In a rapidly shrinking pool of mirror-shade sporting guitar deities, how encouraging to know Kravitz is still out there, in his boots and leathers, fighting the good fight.
