An Alaska Center for Energy and Power device is helping get fine-scale energy-use data into the hands of engineers.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - An Alaska Center for Energy and Power device is helping get fine-scale energy-use data into the hands of engineers as the City of Galena readies to diversify its microgrid.

“It’s been kind of a long road. It’s been in the works for over five years,” Galena City Councilmember Brad Scotton said in an interview Friday. The city and the Louden Tribe have received a few state and federal grants for the solar project over the last five years, and Scotton said it’s now fully funded, with contractors aiming to complete construction of the solar array by summer 2025.

“We shared all that data with the engineering firms, and they’re going to be able to look at at least the production, and what amounts to the consumption, around the community on a very fine-scale,” Scotton said.Toal said the finer-scale data about a microgrid’s energy use is key for some engineering decisions. It’s like seeing a picture closer up — with details emerging that may not have been visible from further away.
