CPS Energy adds 250 megawatts of nuclear power in deal with Constellation Energy, Austin Energy, at South Texas Nuclear Project

CPS Energy has increased its ownership in a Texas nuclear power plant and added 250 megawatts of generating capacity after agreeing to drop litigation tied to the deal. Under the agreement that settled the dispute, CPS increased its stake in the plant by 2% to 42%, giving it another 52 megawatts of the plant’s capacity. It also agreed to purchase 200 more. CPS declined to disclose the cost of the additional capacity.

Energy's plan to shut down three gas-fired units at Braunig facing an ERCOT roadblock The city-owned utilities argued that as part owners they should have been given a chance to refuse or take part in the sale. Constellation and NRG filed a counter with the commission asking to dismiss the claims. Under the deal announced Monday, Austin Energy still owns 16% of the plant and Constellation now holds 42%, down from the 44% it originally sought.

Energy acquiring three gas-fired generating plants in $785 million deal with Talen Energy “Without new dispatchable generation incentives, we’re concerned that end-of-life generation resources will not be able to retire and the cost to keep these plants online will be imposed on all consumers in the market,” CPS Director of Energy Market Policy David Kee told ERCOT last week during a meeting about grid standards.
