Our butterflies are vulnerable to human activity including habitat damage and destruction, pesticide use, pollution and climate change

Some species of butterflies thriver rather unexpectedly in Northern Ireland last year while others suffered major declines according to the latest results from the annual UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme.

Some 14 species of butterfly were monitored in Northern Ireland and while some species soared, even compared to other parts of the UK, some suffered worrying declines. Numbers have gone up 18% from 2022-2023 against a 43% long term fall and significant 68% drop in the last 10 yearsNumbers rose 53% from 2022-2023 but have highly significantly fallen 57% over 20 yrs and 34% in the past 10 years

The green-veined white butterfly had its worst year in NI from 2022-23, with numbers falling 30% after a 22% long-term decline and 59% drop in 10 years
