The House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed a bill that could pave the way for a sweeping ban on TikTok across all electronic devices.

FILE - The TikTok logo is displayed on a smartphone screen, Sept. 28, 2020, in Tokyo, Japan. , which is based in China. It would require the company to divest TikTok and other applications it controls within 180 days of enactment of the bill or those applications will be prohibited in the U.S.

The move is fueled by concerns over potential Chinese government spying. However, one expert believes it’s not any less secure than other U.S. social media apps. “We have to guess at what can be tracked and those of you that are using TikTok and you say hey look at that funny video, I really like that video," he continued. "Well, it’s because the algorithm understands you and your interests, them being able to serve that stuff up to you.”“I can then influence you by only showing you parts of a story, one view, and maybe manipulate your understanding of a concept or an idea,” said Palmer.

The House plans to vote on the bill next week. If it passes, it will be voted on by the Senate before reaching President Joe Biden's desk.
