“You grow your economy by fighting climate change, by creating clean energy businesses. And this grows your economy — it doesn’t shrink it.”
Washington Governor Jay Inslee is sounding an upbeat note in his belief that fighting climate change will prove a boon to the economy, a message he wants to impart to the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Senior Officials’ and Ministerial Meetings which will be hosted in his state in August.
APEC, which will includes the Women and the Economy Forum, is a chance for Inslee to sound his sales pitch: that fighting the increasing threat of climate change can be synonymous with economic growth. Inslee, who briefly ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination as the most vocal climate warrior, is quick to point out that that Washington State is one of the largest exporting states to the Asia-Pacific region, managing nearly $110 billion worth of imports and exports between the U.S.
“The largest transition of the world economy is going to be taking place in the next few decades — since the development of the steam engine,” says Inslee. “That is decarbonizing our economy — and this is an enormous economic opportunity for my state and the nation.”
