PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Eogene Ewe is set to spearhead Malaysia’s challenge in the Asian Junior Championships from July 7-16 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The 18-year-old, who finished as runner-up in the German Junior Open in March will be joined by Lee Jan Jireh, Mohd Faiq Haziq and Lok Hong Quan in the boys’ singles.

On the team selection, national junior singles coach Datuk Misbun Sidek said: “Since the promotion of Justin Hoh to the senior squad, Eogene has been our leading Under-18 singles player.“He has excelled in training and tournaments. Eogene’s advantage is his energy.“Faiq Haziq, who is 16 and youngest among the three, has the technical advantage but still needs to improve his agility and speed.”

In the women’s singles, Ong Xin Yee, Siti Zulaikha Azmi and Italian Junior champion Ung Yi Xing have been selected.“Yi Xing is small in size but is tactically intelligent. We are working on her fitness to sustain her gameplay.” Meanwhile, men’s doubles pairs Bryan Goonting-Lok Hong Quan and Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing were given the nod along with women’s doubles pairs Carmen Ting-Lai Ting Cen, Chong Jie Yu-Clarissa San while Chan Wen Tse has been included as a reserve.The tournament will also serve as preparation for the World Junior Championships from Sept 25-Oct 8.
