5 EV, pitched as a new-age hot hatch to sit alongside two other electric Alpines within the next few years – a bespoke sports car developed with Lotus, and a coupe-SUV. Ahead of its launch in 2024, Alpine has provided a first glimpse of its electric hot hatch, teasing the silhouette of a concept version set to break cover on May 9.
The show car is dubbed the A290_β, or ‘beta’, signifying the car’s pre-release development period. Predictably, it bears a close resemblance to the Renault 5 in profile, with the same stubby proportions, narrow glasshouse and angled rear window. However, look closer and there are hints of performance-led enhancements, such as a roof spoiler extension and a more sculpted bonnet.
Based on the front-wheel drive CMF-B EV platform from the Renault 5, Alpine has – on paper at least – a solid foundation for its performance variant.
