Treasurer Jim Chalmers has cautioned businesses that a temporary boost to skilled migration won’t fix long-term challenges facing Australia’s economy coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s part of the story, but it’s not the whole story. And it shouldn’t be a substitute for training Australians for roles; it shouldn’t be a substitute for childcare reform,” the treasurer told ABC RN Breakfast. Chalmers said enterprise bargaining had failed to lead to sustainable wages growth and flagged it would be revisited as part of the jobs and skills summit to be held in Canberra over September 1 and 2.
