APA Group’s Rob Wheals says the present upheaval provides a chance for Australia to plan for when even more coal-fired generation is removed from our energy mix.

There’s just a hint of wearied frustration in the voice of APA Group chief executive Rob Wheals.sees a mess that has been years in the making

“We’ve actually got a bit of a window into what our electricity market looks like without a third of capacity during the winter. That’s exactly what we’ve got right now – and we’ve seen the mess.”The 30 per cent reduction in coal-fired power generation that has been caused by a combination of plant outages and coal supply disruptions isn’t a one-off, Wheals says, but a preview of a future where, in 15 years or less, we need coal removed from the energy mix.

“If we don’t have a plan, we’ll have supply shocks, price shocks, and then we’ll lose the mandate for this transition that we’re all very much focused on achieving.”Wheals is talking his own book here – it’s in his interests to keep gas flowing for as long as possible. “Twice as much energy was moving through the gas system as through the electricity system – twice as much. And yet you’ve got governments that are not being supportive of developing new gas reserves,” Wheals says.

In the very near term, APA has also ramped up production from its Orbost Gas Processing Plant, which processes gas from Cooper Energy’s nearby Sole field, off the coast of Victoria. While the plant continues to struggle to operate at nameplate capacity, gas processing leapt 36 per cent from April to May.

Labor needs a realistic net zero transition planOPINION: The lesson of the energy crisis is that the decades-long transition to cleaner energy cannot be achieved simply by flicking the off switch on fossil fuels. The LNP has held Australia back for over a decade so much so that flicking the switch rather than a managed transition is our only option left. Really?

Dutton flags Coalition will argue for nuclear powerThe opposition is gearing up for a fight over nuclear energy with the appointment of advocate Ted O’Brien to the Climate Change and Energy portfolio. If only there was a cleaner, greener, more renewable means of getting energy 🤔 Only need to answer two questions - how does the cost benefit analysis stack up and in whose backyard are you building them. That will keep the argument going a lot longer than moving to renewables. Wow. The LNP couldnt even implement a simple debt recovery system without triggering people to end their lives and they, being anti-science, wants to get into nuclear power generation? Wow

Energy Minister to address energy crisis at emergency meetingClimate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen is set to hold an emergency meeting with his state and territory counterparts this week to address Australia's worsening energy crisis. Sounds like they are going to let Europe freeze and leave the uranium in the ground. Can’t you do a deal with the failed Greek economy and use their shipping companies to cart the stuff over? Blame blame blame So the root cause of this mess is our Lib & Lab governments whom for 25 years couldn’t act in our sovereign economic & national interest. 5% of the cheapest energy we produce should stay in Australia to support development of a productive sustainable complex economy. Just fix it
