The Australian’s Adam Creighton says the government is right to get involved in the energy sector, however it’s gone wrong in choosing to “build a gas power station in an area that is filled with coal”. His comments come after the federal government’s recent announcement to build a new power station in the New South Wales Hunter region if the private sector doesn’t step up and bring forward a plan to replace the Liddell coal-fired power station over the next seven months.

"We’ve got the situation where there are three large players and they all cheer on higher prices, they don’t want more supply, so I think the government does have to get involved,” Mr Creighton told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “Where I think the government’s gone wrong with this, is choosing to build a gas power station in an area that is filled with coal, with some of the richest coal reserves in the world, in the Hunter Valley.

Government fuel storage policy to 'ensure reliable supply' and 'create jobs' | Sky News AustraliaEnergy Minister Angus Taylor says ensuring there is a reliable supply of liquid fuels for consumers and creating jobs in Australia were two focal points of the federal government’s $211 million boost to onshore fuel storage.\n\nOn Monday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Mr Taylor announced a plan which will see a 780 megalitre increase to the nation’s fuel storage capacity. \n\nThe new legislation will also ensure a minimum number of days of fuel is kept in Australia, including 24 days for petrol and jet fuel and 28 days for diesel.\n\n“It’s a package which is very focused on making sure consumers get what they want on liquid fuels ... that’s petrol’s, diesel, as well as aviation gas used by aeroplanes, making sure we put downward pressure on prices and avoid price spikes, and there’s reliable supply,” Mr Taylor told Sky News host Peter Gleeson. \n\n“Critically, this is about controlling our own destiny as a country in the worst possible scenarios, it’s also about creating jobs, because we know liquid fuels are really critical to having jobs in agriculture and mining and tradies and other sectors.'\n\nImage: Getty

PM threatens private sector with government intervention in gas market | Sky News AustraliaThe Prime Minister has threatened the private sector the government will forcibly intervene in the gas market and build a new power station in the NSW Hunter Valley unless it can come up with a plan and funding over the next seven months.\n\nScott Morrison will today call for the exploration of more gas reserves including the creation of a new gas hub in Queensland.\n\n'As we turn to our economic recovery from COVID-19, affordable gas will play a central role in re-establishing a strong economy we need for jobs growth, funding gas services and opportunities for all of us,' Mr Morrison will say in a speech.\n\nThe move is in response to the planned closure of the Liddell coal-fired power station, slated for 2023, and the significant cost it would have on Australia's energy market as the government seeks to pay down debt accrued as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n I would've made it 7 days, this has gone on for way too long Yeah, sure they will ! Morrison does a lot of talking but no one takes much notice these days. If the government were to commission a power station, it would be years away. If new legislation was required. It would not pass the senate, and never happen. How quickly Libs flick the switch to socialism when their precious market fails taxpayers again!
