Nordex's electrolyzer is designed to work with intermittent power supply, such as wind energy generated using its turbines.

The pressurized alkaline electrolyzer can produce 22 pounds of hydrogen every hour while consuming less than 50 kWh of energy per kg.In a push toward a more sustainable future, Nordex SE, one of Germany’s top wind turbine makers, has built the prototype of its 500kW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer.

Hydrogen is one such fuel that can replace fossil fuels in cars and even airplanes. However, the current modes of hydrogen generation are still dependent on fossil fuels, making the energy source unsuitable in its current form to fight climate change. Nordex, a German wind turbine company, is foraying into hydrogen generation with a pressurized alkaline electrolyzer.

Prior to this, the company had developed a 50 kW prototype, which is undergoing testing and characterization at its facility in Puertollano, Ciudad Real.At 500 kW capacity, the electrolyzer can generate about 22 pounds of hydrogen every hour and will consume less than 50 kWh of energy per kg of hydrogen produced.
