Eraring power station: Origin Energy and NSW government in detailed talks about a deal the extend its life

Already a subscriber?Origin Energy and the NSW government are in detailed talks to extend the life of the Eraring coal-fired power station on growing political fears of potential blackouts between 2025 and 2027.

Government sources downplayed the idea that a deal with Origin was imminent, with one saying negotiations over many options are still under way. Suggestions of an expenditure review committee meeting on the topic this week were also misplaced, with no meeting scheduled. Energy Users Association of Australia chief executive Andrew Richards likened the potential NSW deal with Origin to “black box” arrangements between the Victorian government and coal power generators.

A spokesperson for NSW Climate Change and Energy Minister Penny Sharpe confirmed the government “is engaging with Origin on its plans for Eraring Power Station and will not comment while the process is ongoing”.
