Climate data from satellites monitoring the Arctic and Antarctic helped Hiroto Nagai compose String Quartet No. 1, “Polar Energy Budget.”This photograph is a still from the performance of String Quartet No. 1 “Polar Energy Budget," composed by Hiroto Nagai.Hiroto Nagai, a geo-environmental scientist at Rissho University in Japan, recently authored and composed String Quartet No. 1, “Polar Energy Budget.

Due to this, Nagai infused his composition with a ‘human touch’ while asserting this as a liberal action. “So far, there haven’t been published attempts and open discussion on sonification-based music composition, nor attempts to demonstrate the methodology required to intentionally affect the audience’s emotions with an artistic piece.”The Japanese composer assigned sounds to different data values after sonifying the climate data from the polar regions.

Nagai integrated various musical elements such as pitch manipulation, instrument assignment, overlaying passages, and musical techniques like pizzicato and staccato. Overall, the composition process involved both scientific data manipulation and artistic intervention to create a piece that simulated the audience’s emotions.The quartet premiered with a live performance at Waseda University in Tokyo in March 2023, which was followed by a panel discussion.
