Rules may vary depending on who is responsible for the energy bills in your property

Citizens Advice has told renters in England that before they switch their energy supplier or tariff to check their tenancy agreement. This is because the way their bills are paid could affect their ability to change it.

Terms may also dictate renters to change the supplier once again when their tenancy ends which could lead to issues if ignored.Writing on X, formerly Twitter, Citizens Advice said: "Make sure you check your tenancy agreement before changing your energy supplier. If you’re renting, you might need to return the account to the original supplier at the end of your tenancy."

It's important to check who it is that is responsible for paying for the energy bills in a property. In many cases, a landlord may be responsible for paying for the energy in which case they will have to green light any changes - but they're not legally obliged to. An easy way of finding out if your landlord is responsible for paying the supplier is if energy costs are included in the total rent cost. However, if you yourself are responsible for paying energy bills you should double check the rules of your tenancy to see if the original energy supplier needs to be added back to the property at the end of a tenancy.
