Fire flares up again at battery storage facility in Otay Mesa

An unpredictable blaze that sparked at a battery storage facility on Wednesday in Otay Mesa picked up again Friday morning, and firefighters were working to bring the flames back under control, a Cal Fire captain said. Thermal runaway — a chain reaction within a battery that causes it to heat up uncontrollably — is being blamed for the flare up, Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette said.

Wednesday, prompting an evacuation warning for businesses in the immediate area and a shelter-in-place order at nearby Donovan state prison because of fears over fumes and potential explosions. The fire sent dangerous levels of hydrogen into the air, so firefighters worked from a distance for nearly a day, pumping water from a hydrant and firetrucks into the building's fire sprinkler system to drench the batteries with water.
