EXTREME temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in April had a significant impact on billions of people in Asia.

Rapid attribution analysis conducted by an international team of leading climate scientists from the World Weather Attribution group indicates that these extreme temperatures, which made life even tougher for impoverished individuals across Asia and displaced Palestinians in Gaza, were exacerbated by human-induced climate change.Across Asia, severe heat waves were felt in April.

Climate change has made the heat waves five times more likely and 1.7 C hotter. If warming continues and reaches 2 C, which is expected in the 2040s or 2050s unless emissions are rapidly reduced, similar heat waves will occur about once every five years and will be another 1 C hotter. El Niño does not have an influence on the high temperatures in West Asia.
