Luxury automaker Porsche has recalled its flagship electric vehicle model over a serious battery defect with the potential to cause a fire.

The federal government's Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts issued the vehicle recall notice earlier this week for Porsche's Taycan EV sold in Australia between 2019 and 2023.

It identified a manufacturing issue in the"high voltage" batteries' cell modules as posing a risk of short circuit and dangerous combustion. The Taycan is often described as Porsche's"technology flagship" electric car. Picture: Supplied "A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property."The EVs were supplied by the manufacturer's domestic branch, Porsche Cars Australia Pty. Ltd.

Owners of the impacted vehicles have been advised to contact an official Porsche dealer to have necessary repairs conducted. "Until the repair is carried out, Porsche urges owners to temporarily limit the high-voltage battery to 80% maximum charge."
