ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A wind energy project that will see more than 300 wind turbines built on the Port au Port Peninsula and in the Codroy Valley area — each more than three times the height of Confederation Building in St. John's — will proceed after being approved by Newfoundland and Labrador's Minister of Environment on Tuesday, April 9.
Bernard Davis accepted the World Energy GH2's environmental impact statement and cleared Project Nujio’qonik from further assessments, subject to the terms and conditions posted. The company submitted its EIS in summer 2023 and was informed by Davis in the fall that the province needed more information. An amended statement was submitted at the end of January, with public comments open until March 20.LETTER: N.L. government can't be seduced by industry proponents into believing hydrogen industry can solve the world’s energy problems
The mega-project has drawn criticism and support from various sides. Supporters, largely union and industry groups, are enthusiastic about job creation and economic spinoff, while critics, mainly residents and environmental organizations, have raised concerns about the natural surroundings and potential social problems.
