Since evaporation also helps desalinate water, a hydrovoltaic device could help deliver clean energy and water simultaneously.

Swiss scientists use evaporation to generate electricity by using a tiny device with channels that produce energy when liquid flows through its unique surface.

“In most fluidic systems containing saline solutions, you have an equal number of positive and negative ions,” explained Tarique Anwar, a PhD student at LNET who was involved in this work. With increasing fluid ion concentration, the surface charge of the nanodevice also increases. The researchers, therefore, concluded that they could use larger fluid channels when working with higher-concentration fluids, making it easier to develop devices that also work with tap or seawater.
