America risks falling behind in its response to climate change, a senior executive for one of China's largest solar equipment makers has warned, in a response to President Joe Biden's introduction of steep tariffs on $18bn of Chinese imports.would"come back to haunt" the development of the U.S. renewable energy industry.
The U.S. tariffs include a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, and tariffs on solar cells and lithium-ion batteries of 50% and 25%, respectively. The Biden administration says the restrictions are needed to counter"unfair" trade practices by China, and to safeguard U.S. manufacturing. But with the U.S. many years behind China both in terms of EV development and renewable energy manufacturing, experts said they found it unlikely that simply buying more time would help spur the nation's—and the world's—all-important drive away from fossil fuels, which the scientific community has repeatedly said is essential if humanity is to avoid catastrophic warming.
Most analysts tend to concur that in the medium- and long-term, a trade war with China isn't in America's best interests. The calculation, rather, appears to be that appearing"tough on China" is a vote winner, ahead of November's presidential elections.
