Honda Motor Co. plans to build a new electric vehicle at its assembly plant in Alliston, Ont., and it will most likely mean the automaker builds an EV battery plant nearby, according to one of the industry’s foremost forecasting firms.
Fiorani’s statements lend further credence to a January report out of Japan by Nikkei, the world's largest financial newspaper, that Honda is weighing a plan to build a new EV plant in Canada at a cost of up to $18 billion. Without elaborating further, Fiorani said Honda is “replacing a current model” powered by the internal combustion engine with an electric version.
“It’s really a good idea to have them local. The less transportation and better access to just-in-time delivery provides a better method to producing vehicles,” Fiorani said. “So, you're going to need to establish battery plants and encourage EV production locally. When pressed by Automotive News Canada at an event In southern Ontario on March 11, the premier sidestepped a specific request for an update on talks between the province and Honda.
