With the Goodyear Plant shutting down in 2020, Alabama Power officials say their focus shifted to the future with cleaner energy.

Alabama Power will demolish the first steam plant the company ever built. Officials say it’s a bittersweet moment because the steam plant in Gadsden changed so many lives.

Around 8:00 a.m., Alabama Power will demolish the plant in east Gadsden. Located behind the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant, the power plant serviced Goodyear from 1995-2020. As part of the company’s efforts to evolve generation sources to the most cost-effective energy mix for customers, it was an important part of the Gadsden regional economy for more than a century. This demolition will help pave the way for potential future redevelopment and reuse of the site.

Joey Blackwell, who is with Alabama Power Media Relations says, “This Saturday we’re going to be taking it down, exploiting it, and when we demolish it, there’s still the old boiler house is still up along with the stack. Those are the final two buildings of the old plant that are there, so, there are no current plans for that site. We’re hopeful someday something might come there.”
