Luke Maher, a skilled stonemason from Perth, is currently working on the maintenance of Dunkeld Cathedral as part of a high level masonry program. The cathedral, which dates back to the 13th century, is one of 70 sites being assessed for the impact of climate change by Historic Environment Scotland.

Luke Maher has worked on a number of prominent heritage assets including the Stone of Destiny, the Antonine Wall and Doune Castle.

Relics of St Columba were brought to Dunkeld in 849, the site of a monastery, to protect them from Viking raids on Iona.Luke said: “The construction of Dunkeld Cathedral took about 250 years – from the mid 1200s to the late 1400s – and it’s amazing that I get to continue that work today. The high level inspections of Dunkeld Cathedral assess the impact of climate change in combination with other factors.

When Luke left school aged 16 he worked in landscaping and grounds maintenance, but wanted something more challenging. “I worked with HES at the Antonine Wall for one year before I applied for an apprenticeship at Doune Castle. I was there for five years. The four-year apprenticeship ran alongside this through the HES Stirling training centre at The Engine Shed.
