The Allan government is conducting a review into minimum energy efficiency standards which could see owners required to replace broken appliances with greener ones.

A push towards more energy-efficient Victorian households is underway as the state government looks to tighten standards for rental properties.

The change could also apply to roofs and windows, with mandated double-glazed windows floated as an idea to reduce energy usage. “In order to realise the change…do you envision a situation where legislation might need to come, say for instance double glazing, where it gets mandated by the government?”

Ms D’Ambrosio said options for exploration include tightening the standards around ceiling installation, draught sealing, hot water heating and cooling. “Cost-benefit analysis is going to be really central to this, we want to hear from people about whether they think it works or not for them," she said.
