Juneau Proposes Fund to Support Transition to Clean Energy in Tourism Sector

Juneau may soon establish a new fund to help the city’s tourism businesses swap out polluting fossil fuel for cleaner forms of energy in their planes, buses, and boats. The proposal would set aside $1 million collected via marine passenger fees to fund a new clean energy loan and incentive program. It’s a small fraction of the $21.5 million in revenue expected from 1.6 million cruise ship visitors this summer. The initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide incentives for businesses to adopt cleaner power sources.
